A treasure of a post, if I may say so, and a great demonstration of your message. I must listen to it again and also have a mind to forward it to my son. He fits the picture of the ‘late developer’ whom you describe at the end; the one who decides it is time to rise up with the previously neglected talents God has given him. Thank you. Very interesting. Might God value the ability to paint the Christ knocking on the door like Holman Hunt, or Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, or Handel’s Messiah, or Milton’s Paradise Lost? I think God values all our gifts… creating a beautiful garden, or a hospitable home, or delicious food for guests… because he gave us these gifts…

Thanks so much, John, and lovely to hear from you. Yes, I did research that… and sort of alluded to it in my reference to everyone having 600-700 “gifts” or capabilities. I guess we can’t use all of them, certainly concurrently, and we use different ones at different stages of life.
I find it quite an energising parable… the call to do what we can with what we have at every stage of life… so one is never without a calling, as one is never without a “talent”, as long as one burnishes it.

What’s interesting is that you choose not to mention the fact that a ‘talent’ was a very large sum of money, about twenty years of a labourer’s wages, or 6,000 denarii. Since a single silver denarius was roughly a day’s pay, a talent was worth anything from $360,000 to $600,000 in the time of Jesus. But, it’s what the three recipients did with it, as you point out, that determined its real value. The fact that the sum was so very large is indicative we tend to underrate them; our own ‘talents’ are, perhaps, more valuable than we might suppose them to be.
