Migration is inevitable; the question is how will we as individuals deal with it for the sake of our own emotional and spiritual health, and how will governments deal with it for the sake of the world, desperate populations, and the environment.

No country can blockade, except at its own detriment, a desperate mass of humanity fleeing away from violence and squalor into relative safety and opportunity in various parts of the world. Instead of making noises about it as if beset with some calamity, prudence requires that governments tackle the issue in a spirit of accommodation and pragmatism. In a globalised world, religions, nationalities and borders would soon become anachronisms reducing everything to shared resources, beliefs and cultures…best wishes.

So many of us are immigrants, certainly have immigrant genes. I have them from Greece and Norway! Our kids have more: their cousins are really pick and mix … there is no future for a world of super-nationalism, the only constraints are practical, like can a country’s infrastructure cope? Well, I suspect it often can, if only those already there were willing to be a bit generous with what they have. In a store at the weekend, I noticed a huge range of home coffee-makers – the kind that give you Costa-at-Home – and thought, We don’t need civilisation at this level, if everything was simpler, more of us would have enough … it is relevent, even if ‘the economy needs it’. Does it?

It is understandable for bus to wish to barricade the door and surround ourselves with barbed wire to keep out the unfamiliar and unpredictable but we risk making a prison for ourselves. Among the many people coming into Europe there may also be mature Christians whose faith has been so refined in the fire of persecution that they will be a much needed blessing to us and teach us many things.

My own father came from China in the 1940’s basically as a refugee to study and excel in Engineering and academia. Since then he has made a full and profitable contribution to the UK well passed normal retirement age, as well as three children born here. I consider myself 100% British but who am I to despise newcomers?
