I guess. Perhaps the issue is how much. Are we saving so much that we are not experiencing life in its fullness today? And what if, like the Rich Fool, "This very night your soul will be demanded of you, and who will get what you have stored for yourself."
Maybe this is an area we each need to seek God for ourselves, since Jesus explicitly tells us not to store up treasures for ourselves, and explicitly tells us God will take care of us like he takes care of the lilies and sparrows.

"In other words, save enough to ensure that you can live without God."

I don't think it's that at all. I think it's about being wise. Of course, it depends on one's relationship to money. Some people do use money as a security instead of God.

Remember when Joseph stored up grain in preparation for the famine in Egypt? He was actually acting in faith, because he was told (through Pharaoh's dreams) that bad times were coming.

Similarly, we know that there will be rough patches and emergencies in our lives, so it is good to reserve excess for those times.

LA, yeah, my husband thinks I am nuts when I take Jesus quite literally when he tells us not to bother to store up earthly treasure, and calls the man who built bigger barns a fool. I guess our business does give us enough cash flow, and we do have some pension from when Roy worked jobs.. so it's easier for me not to bother with storing up earthly treasures. But I do believe Jesus meant what he said in this instance quite literally, and it was advice given in kindness.

I think you can be generous and yet still save for the future. Even Jesus had a certain practicality to his living when he stated "Give Caesar what is due Caesar". I do long for the days of Star Trek Next Generation where the question of money is simply a non-question. There is that episode when they discover a ship with people cryogenically frozen from this century. One man is dreadfully worried about all the money he had stockpiled. The Captain tries to explain to him that money is no longer a "thing" in their society - it has completely vanished from their worldview. Now, I find it hard to believe that poverty and economy were completely eradicated on all the planets in this part of the universe by that time, but Gene Roddenberry indeed had a fantastic vision of a world without need of money. Where people's talents and knowledge were their own reward without needing monetary remuneration. Wouldn't that be awesome?
