Hi LA,
No, I don't think that God has stopped speaking clearly to people. And more clearly to some than to others. I don't know whether that was his sovereign choice, or whether those who hear make space and time to draw close. http://dreamingbeneaththespires.blogspot.co.uk/2010/07/does-god-have-favourites-i-am-afraid-so.html.

I don't know much about Mormonism. I did look at the Book of Mormon once, and it seemed like gobbledygook. On the other hand, Mormons lead productive, disciplined, maybe even happy lives, with so many admirable values, so I wouldn't say that there was nothing of God in Mormonism.

In the Old Testament, God ratified true prophets. Moses' staff became a snake, and his predicted plagues transpired. Elijah successfully challenged the priests of Baal. Jeremiah's prophecies were fulfilled. So perhaps one would look for God's blessing, validation and ratification on the words, ministries and lives of someone who truly hears from God?

Well stated, and right on the money. Yet a friend of mine who works at our state mental hospital as a chaplain and has several "Jesus"es on her ward says that her ward is likely where we'd put Jesus, Elijah, Jeremiah, etc. if tey appeared today. We are so wary now of the David Koreshes of the world, how would we recognize a true prophet?

A couple of question for you...do you think that God has stopped having prophets? And, what do you think of John Smith and Mormonism in the light of this blog post?
