My girls and i had an enchanted Christmas when I read them the Box of Delights.

God willing, your retreat centre will reach the stage at which you have staff (perhaps a volunteer caretaker in exchange for housing) or a part-time gardener and cleaner, and then you could have a puppy who will guard the place beautifully when you travel under your staffs' watchful eyes.

I started reading Rubin because you mentioned her on your blog. I don't know how she did so much in a year. It would take me a decade!!

This made me think back to the first Harry Potter book I read on the train to Basingstoke for a job interview more than 10 years ago. It relaxed me because it was close to what I would have read as a 10 year old. I got the job because I was chilled even though I went to the wrong office for the interview. Must read more books of that genre!

Reading Ruben's Happiness Project earlier this year led to my own rediscovering of childhood pleasures. Reading and writing first of all, and walking and cycling, and having a dog.
So I began to redig some of those wells to rediscover the rich sweet water of enthusiasms forgotten. Starting a book club to read only CHildren's Literature - and so far we have enjoyed Heidi, The Secret Garden, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, and are about to read Masefield's Box of Delights. How well I remember discovering at age 10, The Old Curiosity Shop, which I 'stole' from my mother's book shelf and devoured behind the sofa in case she discovered me reading it (What did I fear? Perhaps taking it without asking...)
I wish I could cycle - but my bike is still at our home in the States and I shall use it again in November when we are there.
And a puppy; oh, a puppy - will I be able to have one again or do we travel too much?

Such joys, Anita - isn't it wonderful to be able to recall, redig and re-enjoy!
