Yes, it's hard to know whether trying harder will do the trick, or whether it's time to give up. For me, I have finally found something which gives me great joy (writing and blogging) and which takes up all my free time, so I have sadly given up the dream of speaking and reading French fluently. It's sad, but knowing I am just dabbling with writing is sad too!! It's lovely to finally be focused on just one thing.

As I read your post, I thought to myself 'I'm not quite as stubborn as Anita in persisting with tasks at which I mostly don't succeed,' but then I remembered my 8 years on the Altar Guild at my church. I made so many mistakes even with the checklist of what needed to be done, and yet I stayed with it for so very long.

The day when I was filling the altar 'candles' with their liquid fuel and spilled the liquid all over and said ,'Sh*t!' right at the altar, in front of the other altar lady, was a defining moment. I realized that I was not cut out for the job.

I looked up (God is up, you know) and begged God's forgiveness and the forgiveness of the other lady for my bad language at the altar, and that may have worked with God, but I don't know about my partner in altar duties.

That's pretty stubborn, so I may not be holier than thou.

Quitting is certainly not something that comes easy to me. Wanting to quit, sure, but actually giving up, not so much. But you're absolutely right. Sometimes, the right thing to do is to boil our focus down to what is important. Thanks for the reminder!
