Changed title. I googled what I had read in the Guardian, Times etc. and the phrase used was “some of the worst riots in British history.” Oops. All the papers agree that these were the worst in living memory.Here's hoping for a quiet evening today, especially since we have to be in London on Friday, alas!

I think we also have to be prepared to be part of the answer to our prayers on this. I have to disagree with you about your title. These are not the worst riots in British history. Britain has a long history of rioting. Some of those rioters e.g. of the 18th and 19th centuries were brutally dealt with by police or soldiers. I am grateful for the restraint shown by the police in recent days, as to counter violence with violence only breeds more violence in the end.
