I watched this film on Good Friday night (not having read this post) and was completely blown away by it. It resonated so much with various things that have been going on with me this Lent, and is such a testament to the call of Christ in the gritty reality of life. Father Christian's final letter is just incredible.

I suppose I was sad because they were amazing people, living in harmony with God, nature, their religious community and the surrounding secular community. Their death–as pawns in the Algerian civil war–apparently served no purpose.
However, leaving the place and people they had committed themselves to serve and love would also have been a betrayal of the ideals they had committed themselves to.
Hard choice. Glad it was not mine!!

Oh my, what a story. I must see this, thanks so much for highlighting it. I'd love to hear more about how you feel that the decision to stay was a mistake, but first, I need to watch the film myself, I suppose! My own gut feeling would be to say to those monks–leave now!
